The transfer capacity of the Moyle Interconnector for the trading of electricity between the electricity markets of Ireland and Great Britain is 450MW for east-west trades during the winter and 400MW during the summer. The trading capacity for west-east trades is 80MW at present, limited by Moyle’s agreements for access to the GB transmission system.
The trading capacity of the interconnector is available to the market for third party access. Under its licence, Moyle makes that capacity available to the market in accordance with access arrangements which are subject to the approval of the Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation (NIAER). SONI Limited, the system operator for Northern Ireland, acts as Moyle’s agent in implementing these access arrangements.

The current access arrangements can be found here. Moyle offers its available capacity to the market in long term (1-3 years) and short term (monthly at present) auctions. Capacity is sold on the terms of a standard contract (“the Moyle Interconnector Capacity Framework Agreement”). The terms of the auctions are set out in the Invitation to Bid documents published in advance each month by SONI. SONI also publishes the auction results on its website. www.soni.ltd.uk.
